World Champion horseman Tommy Manion has shown 27 world champions at 12 world champion Quarters Horse Shows, plus countless wins at many circuits and shows. One of Tommy’s strongest events is Western Riding and in this video he shares his winning techniques and knowledge with the help of a group of his Western Riding seminar participants who demonstrate these techniques.

Western Riding was started in 1948 at the New Mexico State Fair. Monte Forman, a well-known horse trainer, demonstrated the first western riding performance. He wanted this event to show that a free and easy moving ranch horse should be able to get its rider around on the usual ranch chores, over the trails, or give a quiet, comfortable ride in open country through and over obstacles in a sensible, well-mannered fashion. This is exactly what the Western Riding Pattern does.

Manion demonstrates how to choose the right Western Riding horse and gives tips on training and conditioning both you and your horse to become a winning team. Manion covers the different gaits, lead changes, horse’s response to rider, correct hand position, stopping, backing and other important techniques that the judges look for in Western Riding competitions.
