Since
Bill Robertson’s first viewing of
“National Velvet” in the late
1940’s, his fascination with horses
and their ability to jump has been a driving
force in shaping his career. This fascination
has helped to take him from a backyard pony
“Midge” in La Porte, Indiana
to membership on the USET Grand Prix Show
Jumping Team. He went on to a first place
team finish at the Nation’s Cup in
Aachen, Germany in 1962 and a berth as alternate
rider representing the U.S. at the 1963
PAN American Games in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
Today, the fascination continues in Salida,
Colorado where Bill owns and operates a
training ranch that has become known across
the country as a producer of winners, many
from rather obscure, even dismal beginnings.
“Talented horses come from all walks
of life” says Robertson. “I’ve
found them in the darndest places; from
West Texas cattle ranches to Country Fair
race tracks or even the killer pens at the
backwoods auctions.
“My greatest reward is finding a horse
that is capable of competing against today’s
show ring athletes.”
In this unique video tape, Bill Robertson
explains his system, a combination of the
teachings and philosophies of Europe’s
leading masters such as Bertalan De Nemethy
and Richard Watjen and a touch of West Texas
“real cowboy” psychology. It
is a system that has helped him to avoid
horses that are “over-trained and
underbroke” and perhaps most importantly,
it is a system that keeps things simpler.
We’ll see him start a young prospect
in the round pen, test his ability in the
jumping chute, move him through basic lunging
and gymnastics, and finally observe him
as he walks and rides a horse show course.
